Your first run in 60 seconds

Veeramani Run is an endless runner. Veeramani runs forward on his own, the world scrolls towards him, and you decide when he jumps and when he ducks. There is no finish line. The goal is to survive as long as possible, because your score is simply the distance he covers.

  1. Open the game page and press Play now.
  2. For the first three seconds nothing attacks you. Use this time to get comfortable.
  3. When a tank rolls in from the right, jump over it.
  4. When a bomb flies at head height, duck under it.
  5. When a bullet or a high bomb flies over, stay on the ground and let it pass.
  6. When you crash, press Play again and try to beat your best score.

That is genuinely all there is to it. The rest of this guide explains the details that turn a short first run into a long one.

Controls on every device

Computer (Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook)

  • Jump: Space bar or the Up arrow. You can also click anywhere on the game.
  • Duck: hold the Down arrow. Release it to stand up.
  • Fast drop: press Down while in the air to land quickly.
  • Restart: Space, Enter or the Play again button.

The keyboard only controls the game while the game is visible on screen. If you scroll down to read, Space scrolls the page as normal, so you never start a run by accident.

Phones and tablets (Android, iPhone, iPad)

  • Jump: tap anywhere on the game, or press the large Jump button below it.
  • Duck: press and hold the Duck button on the left. Let go to stand up. Pressing Jump while ducking jumps straight away.
  • Bigger view: turn your phone sideways. On Android you can also use the full-screen button.

How jumping really works

Jumping is the heart of the game, and it has more depth than it first appears.

Tap versus hold

The length of your press controls the jump. A quick tap produces a short, low hop that lands quickly. Holding the button a little longer keeps Veeramani rising for longer, producing a higher and longer jump. Short hops are best for single small tanks because you are back on the ground sooner, ready for whatever comes next. Long jumps are for wide obstacles such as a pair of tanks parked side by side.

The fast drop

Pressing Down (or Duck on a phone) while airborne cancels the rest of the jump and pulls Veeramani straight back to the ground. Use it when you jumped too early and can see you will land on top of a tank, or when a bomb is coming at head height just after a jump.

Ducking

Holding Down, or the Duck button, makes Veeramani dive forward into a low slide. Middle-height bombs pass over him. Ducking does not slow the game and you can stay low as long as you like. To get out quickly, just press Jump: he stands up and jumps in one move.

Every obstacle explained

Small tanks

Small, low tanks are the first obstacles you meet. A short hop clears a single one. After roughly the first fifteen to twenty seconds the game becomes fast enough to send two small tanks together, and these need a longer jump.

Big tanks

Big tanks are taller and wider, so they need a full jump. Each one also fires a single shot as it rolls onto the screen. You will see a yellow muzzle flash and hear a crack.

Bullets

Big tanks aim their barrel upwards, so the bullet flies just above Veeramani's head and moves three times as fast as the ground. It always arrives before the tank that fired it. Stay on the ground (or duck) and it misses. Jump too early and you jump into it. Let it pass, then jump the tank.

Bombs

Bombs join the action once the game has built up speed, which on a computer is usually somewhere around a score of 450. They fly at three heights. Low bombs must be jumped, middle bombs must be ducked, and high bombs fly over Veeramani's head and should simply be ignored.

Scoring and difficulty

Your score is the distance Veeramani has run. A short chime plays every 100 points. The game starts at a gentle speed and accelerates smoothly the longer you survive, reaching its top speed after about two minutes of continuous running. On smaller screens the starting speed is scaled to the width of the screen, so phone players get the same reaction time as computer players.

Your best score is stored in a small cookie in your browser. It is shown under the game and on the game-over screen, where a NEW BEST badge appears whenever you beat it.

Fixing common problems

The game does not start

Press the Play now button on the game screen. If you are using a keyboard, make sure the game is visible on screen before pressing Space.

There is no sound

Check the speaker button below the game is not muted. On iPhone, the ringer switch on the side of the phone also silences browser sounds. Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, so sound begins once you press Play.

The game feels slow or jerky

Close other tabs and apps, especially video. The game itself is very light, but a phone running many apps at once can struggle. Plugging in a laptop can also help, since some laptops slow down on battery power.

The page scrolls when I press Space

This only happens when the game is scrolled out of view. Scroll back up to the game and the keys will control Veeramani again.

My best score disappeared

Scores are saved per browser. Private or incognito windows, clearing your browsing data, or switching to a different browser or device all start fresh.
